Performance management can be used for various purposes in an organization:

Strategic Purpose

This is the main purpose of performance management. It involves top management being able to link individual goals with organizational goal. Thereby, the strategic goals of the organization are met through individual goals.

Administrative purpose

Performance management is used for administrative purposes such as promotions, salary adjustment, employee retention or termination, recognition, etc.

Informational Purpose

Performance management serves as a vital communication tool.It provides information about how an employee is doing and information about areas where they need improvement.It also provides information about organizational goals and supervisor’s expectation.

Developmental Purpose

Performance management serves as a developmental tool on the path of the employees.After feedback has been giving to the employee,the manager then provides coaching for the employees.

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT PROCESS

Performance management is an on-going process.It involves two basic processes.First is the knowledge of the organisation’s goals. Strategic planning process take place after the mission and the goal of the organisation has been properly stated. Thus, departments will set objectives that will support organisational goals. Second is the knowledge of the job. This is done through job analysis. Job analysis gives a clearer picture of what is expected of the employee (Aguinis 2009).
